Welcome to Bird Nerdz

Three years ago, after retiring from the Navy, life finally slowed down enough for me to reconnect with the nature I loved in my youth. It started simply—morning coffee on the porch, serenaded by birdsongs I couldn't identify.

I bought some cheap plastic feeders and a bag of seed that looked good. Those big-box store feeders didn't last long between the elements and the squirrels, but something had sparked. I started rebuilding my flower beds to attract birds and pollinators, upgrading to quality feeders of different types and experimenting with better seed mixes. I was hooked.

When I discovered the Merlin Bird ID app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, everything changed. I'd sit outside listening and learning different calls, turning it into a friendly competition with friends to see who could identify the most species. Our group chat became "Bird Nerds"—our significant others couldn't believe we weren't the only ones with this obsession.

Just when I thought I had it all, I discovered the Haikubox, which took me to an even higher level of nerding out. It was especially cool to discover a Barn Owl that visits my property on an almost nightly basis.

I've met so many people who share this passion and who light up when they share their photos, videos, and stories.
