Choosing the right bird feeder and setup guide

The right feeder depends on your birds, your yard, and how much maintenance you want. Use this as a simple “start here” guide.

Step 1: What do you want to see?

  • “I want lots of different birds.”
Start with a hopper feeder plus a platform feeder for maximum variety.

  • “I really want colorful songbirds (cardinals, finches, chickadees).”
Use a hopper or platform for cardinals and a tube feeder for finches and chickadees.

  • “I want hummingbirds.”
You need a nectar (hummingbird) feeder, not a seed feeder.

  • “I want woodpeckers and nuthatches.”
Add a suet feeder (or a seed feeder with suet cages) and/or peanut feeder.

Step 2: Match your yard & effort level

  • Low‑maintenance, fewer refills

    • Larger hopper or house‑style feeder with a 5–15 lb capacity.

    • Good for people who can’t refill every day.

  • Okay with more frequent cleaning, want flexibility

    • Platform feeder (tray) you can use for seed, nuts, fruit, or mealworms.

  • Small space / balcony

    • Tube feeder or compact hanging platform; add a window hummingbird feeder if you want hummers.

  • Heavy squirrel pressure

    • Squirrel‑resistant tube or hopper feeder with adjustable weight settings and a baffled pole.

Step 3: Quick “which feeder is right for me?” table

Your priority Best feeder type(s) Why it fits you
See “as many birds as possible” Hopper + Platform Versatile seed feeders that attract many species.
Focus on cardinals & larger songbirds Hopper or Platform Broad perches, stable ledges for bigger birds.
Focus on finches & small songbirds Tube feeder Multiple ports, sized for small seed‑eaters.
Ground‑feeding birds (doves, juncos) Low or ground Platform Mimics natural foraging style.
Hummingbirds only Nectar/hummingbird feeder Designed for sugar‑water and hummingbird bills.
Woodpeckers, nuthatches, clingers Suet feeder (+ peanut feeder) Matches clinging, pecking behavior.
Small yard / patio Compact Tube or Hanging Platform Efficient, easy to place near windows.
Squirrel‑heavy yard Squirrel‑resistant Tube or Hopper + baffle Weight‑sensitive, harder to raid.

Step 4: A simple starter setup

  1. One hopper or house‑style feeder with quality mixed seed (for cardinals and general variety).

  2. One tube feeder with black oil sunflower or sunflower hearts (for finches, chickadees, titmice).

  3. Optionally, one suet or platform feeder to increase species diversity (woodpeckers, nuthatches, ground feeders)
